History Service Opportunity

Kingswood traces its beginnings to 1869 when Methodists in the community of Rural Hall began meeting in private homes for Bible study and worship.

Twenty-three years later, in June 1892, the Bitting Family of Rural Hall gave a parcel of land on N.C. Highway 65 (near the present Rural Hall Elementary School) as the site for a church. At that time, the congregation was officially recognized at Rural Hall Methodist Church. The first service in the new wooden building was held October 15, 1893.

In 1949, the church began construction on a new brick facility about a half-mile away on East N.C. 65. St. James United Methodist Church now occupies this building.

In 1969, Rural Hall Methodist Church and Stanleyville United Methodist Church merged and took the name "Kingswood." We moved into our present building in 1973. An addition was completed in 1990, providing added classroom space.

As a congregation of the United Methodist Church, our mission is to make disciples for Jesus Christ.

We will be a church that is keenly aware of its mission and accept it as assignment from God. As individuals and as a congregation, we will actively work to accomplish this mission of making disciples for Jesus Christ and growing in our own discipleship.

Our church leaders, both staff and lay leadership, will work diligently to hold the church mission up as the banner that unites us and gives us our spiritual foundation. It will be the yardstick by which we plan ministries, set priorities and assess our effectiveness in following God's will for Kingswood.
